Unhealthy and unsafe
Schools in Kasemeni and Mzuri are the cornerstones of the local community. To ensure good education, the school provides lunch to all students every school day. Although the ingredients are provided by the Kenyan government, the current kitchen in Kasemeni is in a very poor condition. The building is dilapidated and facilities are missing, broken or severely outdated.
Health survey
A recent survey of (young) children in Mzuri and Kasemeni revealed that the health status of a significant number of the children is inadequate. In particular, the one-sidedness of their daily diet is to blame. Providing school meals with fresh ingredients from their own school garden can greatly improve the quality of their daily diet.
A hygienic alternative
Our foundation’s ambition is to build new, easy-to-maintain kitchens and equip them with new, decent equipment. Small storage rooms will be built near the kitchens to store ingredients and kitchen utensils safely and cleanly. Large gardens will be built around the schools to provide vegetables and fruit for the children.
Our approach
The whole project consists, for both Kasemeni and Mzuri, of:
- the construction of large school gardens, to be maintained by the children themselves, under the responsibility of the parents;
- construction of several large water tanks with pumps, for watering the school gardens;
- fencing for security and protection against (wild) animals;
- school kitchens where the parents, on a daily basis, cook with ingredients from the school gardens.
A kick-off of the first phase of the project has now taken place: the construction of water tanks and the fencing of the school gardens.
