Water is of vital importance
In 2021, our foundation made it financially possible to dig a so-called dam, in order to create extra storage capacity for water. This resulted in a dam of approx. 11 x 5 m2 and approx. 2 m deep. The dam fills up in the rainy season and now provides drinking water for the local population all year round. The village elders ensure that the water is available to the entire community, but especially to the most vulnerable families.
A lot of time was spent consulting with the village elders about the governance needed to make the project a success. In the meantime, they are putting the finishing touch to house rules, which must be endorsed by all participants.
Continuation
At the beginning of 2022, it was determined that the capacity of the dam is insufficient for the construction of vegetable gardens for the 20-25 poorest families and for the water supply of livestock. A significant increase in the dam is therefore highly desirable, all the more so that it would not only improve the food supply of the community but also their self-reliance.
It is also necessary that a sturdy fence is placed around the dam for the safety of small children and to be able to keep animals at a distance.
Furthermore, a trough for drinking water for the cattle, a solar-powered pump to get the water out of the dam and a storage tank are provided.
Project completed – end of 2022
At the end of 2022, we increased the capacity even further to more than 3000 m3. A fence has been placed around the entire site (about 1.5 ha) to protect the plants from roaming animals, a water pump, water tank and pipes have been placed. In other words: the project is basically finished. We are waiting for the rain.
However, follow-up will take place with each follow-up visit to help the community to make this project a lasting success.
